Did you know that a recent Â鶹´«Ã½ Southeast graduate in elementary education is using place-based training to bring nature into her classroom?

Amanda Friendshuh completed her Bachelor of Arts in elementary education at Â鶹´«Ã½S in May 2020 and immediately was hired to teach third grade at Chapman Elementary and Middle School in Anchor Point, Alaska while also participating in Â鶹´«Ã½S’ reading specialist master’s program.

Amanda came from a small community in Interior Alaska and said Â鶹´«Ã½S provided the perfect transition to college life and a larger community, providing exemplary training in education while still maintaining a close connection to the outdoors.

She says her academic career at Â鶹´«Ã½S has directly contributed to how she approaches education in her own classroom and her ability to serve a diverse population of students.

Amanda’s advice for young women entering higher education is to seize every opportunity to learn and discover.
