General Counsel Matt Cooper to Depart Â鶹´«Ã½ after 13 Years of Service

September 6, 2024

Dear Â鶹´«Ã½ Community,

Mat Cooper in a white button up and red tieAs we shared during the Board of Regents meeting today, it is with mixed feelings that I announce the departure of Â鶹´«Ã½ General Counsel Matt Cooper. The General Counsel is a vital part of the university leadership team, serving as the chief legal officer to the Board of Regents, system leadership, and all campuses throughout the system.

Matt has decided to return to private practice after nearly 13 years of service to Â鶹´«Ã½, four as General Counsel. He joined the Office of the General Counsel in 2011 and has provided steady counsel and guidance in some of the System’s most challenging times. Matt’s thoughtful legal analysis and leadership have been an incredible asset, and he consistently keeps the welfare of our students, staff, and faculty as his primary concern. Matt’s last day will be September 27, 2024.

We are committed to a smooth transition and, in the coming days and weeks, will begin a search for Matt’s successor. Associate General Counsel Wayne Mowery has agreed to serve as Interim General Counsel and will lead the office until we fill the role permanently. He is well-equipped for the role, having practiced law with a focus in higher education, intellectual property, and international trade compliance for more than 25 years. I appreciate his willingness to take on this responsibility and am confident in his leadership as we navigate this transition.

Please join me in thanking Matt for his leadership, integrity, and unwavering commitment to our university system. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

Sincerely,
Pat Pitney
President, Â鶹´«Ã½
